Abstract: Due to the impact of technology, globalisation and democracy, the present world is changing. This transformation affects most walks of socio-economic life. It contains moves from a scarcity to an affluent economy, from calling for equality to legitimating inequality, from fulfilling needs to expressing extravagant desires and from egalitarianism to uniqueness. This situation changes the role of the judiciary as part of the social structure. The judiciary today becomes an important organ for keeping a social equilibrium within an environment of almost limitless freedom. Extreme individualism emerged from the atmosphere of almost unlimited liberty as equality became irrelevant. But to maintain normal life, a working balance should be established between social needs and individual aspirations. The judiciary, therefore, should find the way to combine freedom with responsibility and maintain liberty with social solidarity. In conclusion, promoting both an individual-oriented society and social-oriented individuals is the renewed role of the judiciary.
