Abstract: E-health, the application of telecommunications to health services, including health research, healthcare delivery, wellness programs, education and distance learning, is a rapidly growing field. Financial distress, decentralised, unregulated services, gaps in longitudinal records, poor quality control with lack of visibility and gaps in access (based on time, locale and individual resources, perceptions and attitudes) characterises the health community; e-health may be the answer. Yet, despite overarching benefits, there are many potential perils in implementing an e-health solution. Therefore, Return on Investment analysis and business process reengineering should be implemented proactively and assessed through project life cycle, to ensure success.

Keywords: telemedicine; e-health; telehealth; Return on Investment (ROI); benefits analysis; financial; evaluation; business process reengineering; economic; health services.
