Abstract: The interest for rural entrepreneurship research was recently enhanced by the specific programs implemented by the European Union for the development of remote areas. The existing body of literature is mainly focused on rural entrepreneurship activities realised in developed economies. However, the recent accession to the European Union of several countries from Central and Eastern Europe has indicated the need for a deeper understanding of rural entrepreneurial processes in transition economies. Using both secondary and primary data, this study attempts to identify and analyse the favouring and the inhibiting factors for the development of rural entrepreneurship activities, as well as the marketing approach adopted by the rural entrepreneurs in Romania. The paper concludes with a discussion of the main findings and with practical propositions for enhancing the development of rural entrepreneurship at institutional and local level.
