Abstract: This paper deals with a new numerical approach to simulate the machining process of the fibre-reinforced composite materials. The main outcome of the paper is to predict cutting damage in terms of delamination phenomenon between fibres and matrix and matrix cracking. This can be used to compute and rate the influence of working parameters on the cutting forces and damage mechanisms. The characteristics of individual fibres, matrix and fibre/matrix interface are considered to be the most important factors for evaluating the cutting-induced damage in composite materials, from micromechanical viewpoint.

Keywords: numerical modelling; machining composites; damage modes; chip formation analysis; fibre reinforced composites; delamination; matrix cracking; cutting damage.
