Abstract: Modern methodology of automotive cam design is presented. Those newer techniques that, in the author|s opinion, show the most promise are briefly described and references are given. Descriptions of methods and computations are in only enough detail to show the basic theory. A very brief discussion of splines is given, followed by an outline of cam design starting with valve motion and finishing with manufacturing tests.

Keywords: spline; valve motion; polydyne method; residual vibrations; cam-follower; tuned cam; offset curve; design speed; feedrate; CNC.
