Abstract: Despite the rich literature in the field of product development, there have been few studies in the field of specifications. Specifications are vital for reduction of lead-time, cost and improving quality. With the help of a questionnaire study, this paper first identifies the important control parameters in specifications perceived by the suppliers. The results from the survey are regrouped into different parameters such as supplier capability, same segment supplier, etc. In order to develop an understanding of the context and causal conditions, three in-depth case studies were conducted in an OEM and three expert supplier firms in the auto industry. A conceptual framework was identified as a result of the analysis of the control elements. Comparisons between the OEM and best practice Toyota resulted in the identification of important factors. It was concluded that interplay between the different specification control parameters was vital to the success of projects.
