Title: Publishing in the right place or publishing the right thing: journal targeting and citations' strategies for promotion and tenure committees

Abstract: Over the past decades business schools have experienced an increasing demand for their diplomas. The business press noticed and set about ranking these programmes. This paper outlines the various ranking criteria and focuses on the last bit of policy prescription it outlines, namely to publish in |high quality| journals. It is here it where, it is suggested, certain perverse effects of the business school ranking system are apparent.
