Abstract: Building in reliability into a new product is costly and the implication of unreliability costlier. Determining the desired reliability performance, and defining the specifications that will achieve it, is a challenging topic in new product development. In an earlier paper, the authors developed a conceptual model for decision-making with regard to product performance and specification in a general context. In this paper, the model is used to describe the process of establishing the desired reliability performance and deriving the reliability specifications that will ensure the desired performance.

Keywords: reliability performance; reliability specifications; new product development; NPD; conceptual modelling.
