Abstract: The intersection of transportation and technology is an increasingly critical one, as it influences the efficiency, performance, and market relevance of transport and logistics services. This paper reviews the literature on technology usage and commercialisation by the service sector in general, and by the transportation sub-sector in particular. A typology of service organisations and their technology commercialisation is suggested, and the relevant literature is analysed. This paper also discusses how technology commercialisation in transportation contributes to the competitive edge of its organisations and identifies the barriers and facilitators to commercialisation.

Keywords: transportation sector; commercialisation of technology; utilisation of technology.
