Abstract: This paper reviewed the literature on potential health concerns, occupational exposure assessment methods and control strategies for nanomaterials. Additionally, recommended methods to minimise potential health risks and environmental consequences are discussed. The review is also unique in documenting current research and regulatory initiatives for assessment and control of engineered nanomaterials. Not surprisingly, given the rapid expansion and magnitude of nanotechnology research, information on health risks is still evolving with only a few research studies on exposure assessment and control methods for nanomanufacturing. Currently, the implementation of traditional industrial hygiene engineering controls, work practices, and personal protective equipment are adequate in minimising workplace exposures. However, the need for designing nanomaterial products and technologies that incorporate hazard potentials, exposure and risk assessment methods, and control strategies cannot be overemphasised. Future challenges with nanomaterials would require improving the existing knowledge base on accurate hazards and exposure assessment that convey opportunities, benefits and challenges.
