Abstract: As oil prices continued to climb in the second half of 2005, the US government began to take note. In his 2006 State of the Union address, US President George W. Bush acknowledged that ||America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world||. This paper examines the recent trends in US surface transportation with a special focus on mass transit systems and ridership. The role of government policy and funding in developing and sustaining mass transit systems will be explored to see what lessons can be applied to US transport systems in the future.
