Abstract: This paper illustrated a method that clarified an interdisciplinary and loosely defined research field – knowledge visualisation – in terms of analysing citations related to knowledge visualisation. We also applied this method to characterise the research trends of knowledge visualisation by chronologically examining its citations. This study may provide helpful guidance to researchers who are interested in the study of knowledge visualisation; moreover, the method used in this research can be applied to find out the underlying disciplines of a designated research field. The procedure used in this research is generic in nature and it is generally applicable in other comparable fields. We demonstrated the workings of this method by uncovering the underlying disciplines of knowledge visualisation and illustrating its research trends.

Keywords: knowledge visualisation; learning; innovation; citation analysis.
