Abstract: In the context of environmental degradation and soaring prices for a barrel of petroleum, biofuels are now being presented as a renewable, sustainable, and alternative fuel for compression ignition engines to reduce the dependency on petroleum import, global warming, and preventing engine life. This paper has reviewed the effect of biofuel (pure oil and different blends with conventional diesel fuel) on engine performance, emission characteristics, and durability of engine for compression ignition engines based on comparisons with standard diesel fuels. It is also reviewed that biofuel can be replaced with fossil diesel fuel due to its similar fuel properties and the engine can be operated smoothly without any engine modifications to balance GHG emissions in the environment. The review has suggested that the implementation of biofuel results in the reduction of engine life due to a few tribological issues in the main components of C.I. engines.
