Abstract: The aim of this paper is to determine the geoenvironmental properties of the groundwater protective soil layers in Brass Island, the Niger delta region of Nigeria. Six borings were sampled in accordance with BS 1377:1975. The soils through which the borings were made consisted of inorganic clays, sandy–clay and sandy–silt mixtures. Permeability, transmissivity, leakage coefficient and formation constants were evaluated. The results suggest a high transmissivity and leakage factor and also that the permeability is heterogeneous. Consequently, the groundwater in this study was found to be very susceptible to pollution.
