A Simple Algorithm for Reducing Time in Image Sequence Analysis

Abstract: This paper presents a new algorithm used to detect differences between subsequent frames in a dynamic environment based on statistical analysis of the greyscale variations on a sequence of frames, which have been taken in a time period. The challenge is to identify motion in a rapidly changing environment, while overcoming the necessity of acquiring prior background information. To these means, a pixel comparison approach was adopted, as well as the use of statistical analysis to reduce noise. The algorithm focuses on the major changes in frames, i.e. motion, ignoring frames that remain the relatively similar. This feature renders the algorithm a useful tool in the hands of anyone intending to extract visual information from frames captured with a time difference of one second or more. Ultimately, the paper presents the testing results and conclusions.
