Abstract: In this paper we present a custom system design of a multi-service access concentrator node. Specifically we focus on the case of Ethernet traffic aggregation over MPLS-based optical backbone networks. Our system is based on a custom Network Processor, which has been designed to target the specific requirements of multi-service access nodes. We discuss the hardware (HW) and software (SW) design for the implementation of the application and present the performance results discussing the bottlenecks that have been identified and the techniques we used to enhance the system performance.
