Subjective and simultaneous estimation of depth perception on computer-generated stereogram

Abstract: A stereogram is a two dimensional flat image viewed in such a fashion as to produce a three dimensional effect, i.e, the sense of depth. A variety of software for generating the random dot stereogram (RDS) and single image stereogram (SIS) has been released on the internet web site. On the other hand, various hidden object images with gray level gradation called depth map image (DMI) in monochrome must be prepared in advance. The possibility of the subjective depth perception is discussed using a set of similar stereograms or a simultaneous observation of a few different stereograms. It is pointed out that the visual estimation of 3D virtual images covering image quality is simply carried out by means of disparity of two eyes, i.e. binocular parallax in stereoscopic vision, on a computer display screen or a sheet of hard copy. The image quality of 3D virtual image with depth is affected by the gradation of DMI often called hidden image rather than the resolution number of pixel of repeated texture pattern called wall paper. However, it is impossible to take a photograph of stereogram with 3D virtual images which may be viewed between the stereogram plane and the eye position. It should be noted that the original images: Figure 2 to Figure 5 are demonstrated in color, but are printed using the art work with gray level in this paper.
