Analysing dielectric interphase in carbon-black-filled polymer composite materials

Abstract: This work reports a theoretical study of the dielectric properties of carbon black particles in a polymer matrix at microwave frequencies. Many classical mixing laws have been developed to predict the complex permittivity for composites materials, however, these laws fail to predict the complex permittivity mainly at higher concentration because many parameters, such as the particle size, their distribution and mostly the existence of the interphase region between the filler and the matrix, are note taken into consideration. A new model based on the interphase approach derived from the quasi-crystalline approximation with coherent potential was proposed for predicting the effective complex permittivity. The experimental data are compared to the values calculated by the proposed model. We show that the interphase approach gives a good agreement with experimental results. It indicates that the interphase between the matrix and the filler may significantly affect the effective permittivity of composite materials.
