A survey of space mission architecture and system actualisation methodologies

Abstract: Improving space mission actualisation methodologies is a continuous activity in space systems engineering. In this paper, we review current research that proposes deviations from the traditional standard systems engineering methodologies for formulating and implementing space missions. We categorise the approaches into methodologies targeting: 1) space systems in general; 2) small satellites; 3) generic systems. A three-phase mission life-cycle scheme is also incorporated in the classification regime. We observe that the quest for new methodologies to realise space systems is steered by research efforts targeting small satellites. Further, relatively diverse overall research incentives are revealed. For instance, minimising cost and labour, improved reliability, rapid deployment, etc. are some of the common motivations behind the reviewed research. Majority of the methodologies target the conceptual phase of mission architecture and system design. Three key future research areas are also identified and elucidated.
