Abstract: This paper presents an artificial neural network (ANN)-based distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) using back propagation (BP) method for improving compensation of THD and reactive power demand in PV tied grid system. The vital function of this DSTATCOM is compensation of current harmonics, reactive power demand, and maintains unit power factor. A unit vector template generation (UVTG) technique is used to estimate reference source current. The back propagation method-based ANN has been adopted for evaluation of adaptive hysteresis band (AHB). The performance of the ANN-based AHB is compared with analytical method-based AHB and fixed hysteresis band (FHB). The performance of the proposed test system is designed and analysed in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The obtained results are validated in real-time simulation using Xilinx system generator (XSG).
