Abstract: In this study, a numerical simulation has been carried out for three-dimensional turbulent flows around a bluff-based bus-like body and actual bus body. The first step of this study is to verify the effectiveness of the CFD analysis. In the second step, to reduce the drag of the actual bus model, parameter studies are performed with attention to effective utilisation of the rear-spoiler equipped at the roof-end of upper body. From the results of this study, it is clear that the adoption of RNG k-ε turbulence model and nonlinear quadratic turbulence model with the second order accurate discretisation scheme predicts, fairly well, the aerodynamic coefficients. The results also show that the aerodynamic drag for a commercial bus can be reduced by 14% with the use of a drag reduction device.
