Abstract: Firefly algorithm (FA) is a new optimisation tool, which has been applied to various optimisation problems. In this paper, a new FA variant is proposed to enhance the exploration and exploitation abilities. The proposed approach is called HMFA, which employs hybrid mutation strategies. It is hopeful that different mutation strategies result in different search characteristics. To verify the performance of HMFA, we test it on several well-known benchmark functions, and the obtained solutions are compared with some recently proposed FA variants. The comparison results show that our approach can achieve promising performance on the majority of test functions.
