Abstract: Although rework is amongst the most significant contributors to construction time and cost overruns, projects continue to suffer from this chronic phenomenon, and thus it appears that there is always a need for further research into the root causes of contributors to rework incidents at both levels, academia and industry. The objective of this study, therefore, is to identify, explore and rank the relative importance of causes instigating rework in building projects. To this end, a structured questionnaire survey comprising thirty six possible rework contributors was distributed to a statistically representative sample of contractors. Using the relative importance index technique, the principle factors related to 'client', 'designer', 'contractor' and 'exogenous' groups are determined. The findings fill a gap in knowledge of the salient contributors to rework in building construction, which can be used to assess the potential rework causes, thus enabling the application of efficient management criteria and effective control systems.
