Abstract: Fused deposition modelling is a powerful additive manufacturing technology used for fabricating parts strand by strand and layer upon layer. It is not only capable of producing parts with various geometries, but also can achieve specific mechanical properties to satisfy the performance requirement. This paper presents a methodology to model the elastic mechanical behaviour of this layered and 'composite-like' orthotropic material. Tensile and torsion tests were conducted in order to obtain the values of compliance/stiffness matrix of the material. Based on the material model and test data, analytical method and numerical simulation were employed to predict the elastic behaviour of different parts made from fused deposition modelling. The predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.
