Abstract: The paper presents a simulation-based approach devoted to support training activities in car terminals. The training audience in car terminals includes drivers and parkers mainly, however such approach relies on a modular and scalable architecture therefore new modules can be added to meet specific training needs for different types of operators. The training effectiveness is related to the ability of the proposed system to recreate, realistically and with a suitable level of detail, the main features and operational processes of a car terminal. The simulation architecture has been provided with interoperability capabilities that offer the users the possibility of experiencing joint cooperative training scenarios involving drivers, parkers and different types of ships and yard layout. The architecture includes different interoperable simulators, namely the operator simulator, the ship simulator and the vehicle simulator. The objective of this article is twofold: 1) a general overview of the current state of the art is given; 2) in the second part the system architecture is presented together with an application example that shows how the simulators can be used for cooperative training in car terminals.
