Becoming environmental stakeholders: evidence from the forestry machinery industry

Abstract: In the forestry industry, machinery producers often face environmental stakeholder pressures for the actions of their customers. As a result, these machinery firms themselves act as environmental stakeholders to their customers. We examine this transformation process of a forestry machinery firm into an environmental stakeholder using a qualitative case study method that comprises both within-case and cross-case analysis techniques. For sample cases we have selected the top two global forestry machinery firms. This study synchronises the stakeholder-enterprise relationship by inspecting the machinery firms as enterprises and stakeholders. Stemming from this understanding, we have developed a conceptual framework of a four-tier stakeholder pressure process. This framework provides the foundations for possible synchronisation of another layer to the existing stakeholder theory.
