A theoretical comparison of the performance characteristics of diesel combustion systems with auxiliary chambers

International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 16, No. 1, 1995

Abstract: This study focused on the relationship between the mean effective pressure loss of diesel engines and the momentum intensity of the gas jet in the throat between the main and auxiliary chambers. A theoretical comparison was made of the correlation between these two specific values in several diesel combustion systems with auxiliary chambers. The results indicated that a portion of the fuel should also be injected into the auxiliary chamber in order to improve engine performance. It was also found that, in comparison with a typical IDI diesel engine, the performance of the air cell combustion system and the turbulent combustion system is inferior in some engine speed ranges.
