Tyre factors and front wheel vibrations

Abstract: An extensive survey is given of both the analyses of in-plane and out-of-plane tyre dynamical performance. The in-plane tyre response model incorporates the highly important variation of the effective rolling radius with changing tyre deflection. Theoretical and experimental plots are shown for the response to fluctuations in vertical axle position and in tyre radius (out-of-roundness). The out-of-plane tyre model is based on the well-known taut string model. Tyre mass effects have been accounted for in an approximative manner. Experimental frequency response plots show good correspondence with theoretical findings. A simple front wheel suspension system showing three degrees of freedom illustrates the use of the tyre model.
