Abstract: The charging of electric vehicles forms a new market, which is emerging partially from existing energy markets. A new market requires a new market model; a description of roles, responsibilities and processes. Designing a market model for a yet non-existent market is complex and abstract, since future market dynamics are difficult to predict. Simulation games are a proven method to deal with such complexities but have rarely been applied on new market model designs. The novel E-CITY 2020 simulation game has been developed to examine the contribution of gaming simulation to the Dutch market model design. The game resulted in increased and shared understanding of the future market model for both designers and participants. Second, it identified requirements for successful implementation of the market model. The results lead us to conclude that simulation games are an effective tool to overcome complexities in future market model development.
