Abstract: This paper presents a new method for the control of the gap distance between the electrode and the work-piece in electrical discharge machines. The method exploits the cyclic behaviour of electrical discharge machining and makes use of an iterative learning control approach with an additional adaptation of the initial point of iteration. The result is a gap behaviour less sensitive with respect to the typical strong stochastic noise, which affects the electrical discharge machining process.
