Performance and emission characteristics of a DI compression ignition engine operated on PODL biofuel

Abstract: This paper presents the results of investigations carried out both numerically with the CFD code CONVERGE and experimentally on a single-cylinder, four stroke, direct-injection, CI engine. The tests are performed with neat diesel, neat palm oil (PO) and different blends of PO and the D-limonen solvent (PODL), like 10%, 15% and 20% by mass of D-limonen in PO (PODL10, PODL15 and PODL20). Engine performances using PODL are observed and compared to neat diesel operation. When the engine is fuelled by the PODL blends, the experimental results illustrate the same power output with slightly lower thermal efficiency and the generated pollutants are in the same level as their produced with neat diesel combustion. Numerical simulation is an achieved step with in-cylinder simulation of biofuel combustion and has illustrated that with advancing the injection timing to 30 CA BTDC for PODL20, in-cylinder pressure and consequently the brake thermal efficiency is improved moderately.
