Video-conferencing at Helsinki University of Technology
by Kari Salkunen
International Journal of Continuing Engineering Education and Life-Long Learning (IJCEELL), Vol. 2, No. 2/3/4, 1992

Abstract: The paper discusses the use of video-based engineering education at Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. Video-conferencing has been used mainly in the Centre for Continuing Education in a variety of continuing education programs, but also in some degree programs. Users of the medium have found that video-conferencing events are successful, but do require additional work in educational design. In engineering education, visualisations and simulations are needed, which are not amenable to, say, 'audio-only' presentations. Video can be effective in meeting such needs, but training and education using video-conferencing should be supported by other media. On the systems side, two requirements were identified by the users: (1) the need for multi-conferencing facilities, and (2) the need for graphics transfer.
