Multimedia communication and training applications in computer-integrated manufacturing

International Journal of Continuing Engineering Education and Life-Long Learning (IJCEELL), Vol. 2, No. 2/3/4, 1992

Abstract: In recent years it has been recognised that the shift from a supplier's to a buyer's market has led to changed competitive conditions. Increasing demand for products which are specified by the customer itself leads to changes in mass-production-oriented production philosophies. Predetermined repetitive tasks are the exception in 'make to order' industries. Therefore, especially in one-of-a-kind production, qualified personnel are required for tackling unforeseen and frequently changing problems. The paper reports the results of two research projects funded by the European community and describes new technical approaches in multimedia communication networks and training applications to increase concurrent engineering and just-in-time training in one-off manufacturing and assembly. By using broadband communication systems, even in geographically distributed departments of a company, computer-supported cooperative work and instruction will become as easy as in a shared meeting room.
