Abstract: The act of documenting and representing the urban environment with technology often generates tension with our embodied experience of the city. The performance work 'Walking LA. | (Sur)facing the City' was created by choreographer and artist Sara Wookey based on her on-foot explorations of Los Angeles. Digital photography, writing, sound and the body itself were employed in these explorations, the ensuing development of the piece, and the performance they are discussed in first person from an interwoven theoretical and practice-based perspective. The printable artefacts of her process – photographs, sketches and maps – are combined in graphic illustrations by architect Kaitlin Drisko, who overlays these elements to visualise the references to interactivity, translation, memory, documentation, practiced space and trace.
