Aerospace industries in small countries

Abstract: Aerospace industries are regarded as prestigious industries all over the world. Those countries that have such an industry want to keep it, develop it and protect it in different ways. Those countries that do not belong to the 'club' want to join it. The problem is, however, that it is very difficult to become a competent aerospace manufacturer, especially for a small nation with limited resources. Sweden is one of the few small countries that have succeeded in building up and running a largely self-sufficient aerospace industry. The Swedish commitment to armed neutrality, coupled with strong government encouragement, has assisted this development. The Swedish industry pursues a three-pronged policy: advanced military aircraft, commuter aircraft, and international cooperation programmes
