Abstract: In a 'keynote' address delivered to an audience of automobile industry representatives (International Association for Vehicle Design Fourth Congress, 2 March 1987, Geneva, Switzerland), the Executive Vice President of Chrysler Motors Corporation addresses the problems of the USA's massive federal budget deficit. The problems of US trade are intertwined with the problems of the competitiveness of US industry, and the author argues that rather than slide into short-term protectionism, the USA should address the long-term issues of competitiveness for the 1990s.
