Abstract: The discussion of emission reduction strategies for the pollutants sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in connection with the problems of acid rain and dying forests requires, besides restrictions for energy demand and resources, the consideration of environmental restrictions to determine the future energy supply structures. This report describes the procedure and the assumptions to determine these structures by applying a linear dynamic optimization model of the MESSAGE type (Model for Energy Supply Systems Analysis and their General Environmental Impact). Possible resulting shifts of the optimal future energy supply structures are also demonstrated for the Federal State Baden-Wurttemberg of the Federal Republic of Germany. The results are based on a study the authors are performing for the project European Centre for Air Pollution Control Measures at the Nuclear Research Centre at Karlsruhe.
