Abstract: The introduction of new technologies, especially those of micro-electronics based products, could lead to a deepening of the technological dependence of the Arab world; alternatively it can be seen as presenting a historical opportunity for Arab nations to master new technologies. The paper examines the opportunities and difficulties for Arab nations, in the context of the experience of other countries. It considers government policies towards, and the socio-economic impacts of, the development of micro-electronics based industries.
