Abstract: A company's mission, organization, research and development environment and internal information flows are important factors contributing to its creativity and overall success. Even more important is the selection and motivation of its people. The paper describes AT&T Bell Laboratories' strategy for managing creative effort ''for fun and for profit''. This paper is based on a speech delivered at the symposium ''Creativity in science'' held at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico, USA, 13-14 August 1984, and published in the Proceedings of that symposium.
