Technology transfer effectiveness in university-industry cooperative research

Abstract: This paper reviews some basic questions regarding university-industry technology transfer, puts forward some of the key principles for a successful technology transfer effort, develops a general mathematical model of the process based on an analogy with chemical reaction rates, and discusses some applications of the model. A successful technology transfer experiment (the University of Minnesota's Center for Interfacial Engineering, a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center) is briefly described as an example of the application of the model.
