Abstract: In recent years, bulk carrier casualties have increased dramatically, Most of the damaged bulk carriers were totally destroyed by the structural failures of the weak structures such as the single side structure and the corrugated transverse bulkhead. The double hull bulk carrier will be a solution to improve the situation. It is a more rigid, efficient and safer structure than the conventional single hull type but it has disadvantages of weight and cost. In this study, the optimum structural design of bulk carriers with double side skin was performed to minimise the structural weight. This study shows that the weight of the optimised double hull bulk carriers can be reduced to a reasonable amount in comparison with the existing single hull types, not optimised.
