<description>The Greek Coastal System &#40;GCS&#41; has attracted the interest of researchers in the past and still offers many opportunities for research. Brief literature review and background information on the GCS is provided. As the GCS market matures, new technological and network demands evolve. On the basis of a small&#45;scale private R&amp;amp;D project, some basic attributes of hub&#45;and&#45;spoke operations, involving existing vessels and innovatively designed high&#45;speed passenger vessels, are discussed. The paper focuses on network and marketing issues, and aims to trigger further discussion on this issue of special interest.</description>

<description>A ship&#39;s autopilot adjustment is a matter of utmost importance since it affects its safety, command as well as fuel and time efficiency. Numerous techniques usually based on models which simulate the weather and loading conditions are used in order to achieve optimum adjustment. Nevertheless, perfect steering is not yet accomplished mainly due to the infinite number of different situations during sea passages. We claim that a CBR approach which selects the best out of a finite, pre&#45;installed set of device configurations using specific criteria can compete with existing methods and continuously improves itself during the ship&#39;s life cycle.</description>

<title>Pollution status and sustainable management of Xiamen Bay in China&#58; a brief review</title>

<description>The continuous increase in population coupled with economic growth, rapid urbanisation and infrastructure development have resulted in the pollution of the marine environment of Xiamen Bay. Its ecosystem has become vulnerable to pollution and chemical pollutants which may have changed the coastal ecosystem&#39;s biogeochemistry. This study identifies the pollution sources, status and pollution effect of Xiamen Bays ecosystem. This paper reviewed the present management system and policy in this ecosystem. The authors suggest that environmentally sound technology should be adapted for pollution prevention, control and remediation in Xiamen Bay. Sustainable management may help achieve the pollution protection of its whole ecosystem.</description>

<title>The structure of the market in the Greek Italian sea transportation&#58; a theoretical and empirical investigation</title>

<description>The paper investigated the economic structure of the Ferry market between Italy and Greece. Its tools are those of Managerial Economics and Microeconomics. First, the conditions of demand and supply are examined looking in particular into the number of companies in each route, free entry&#45;exit as well as other variables. Then the main characteristics of oligopoly are set. Finally, we have calculated the Herfindahl&#45;Hirschman index for the structure of markets. We used the market share of each company in each route for passengers, cars and Lorries. Patras&#45;Ancona found oligopoly; Patras&#45;Bari is monopoly as well as Patras&#45;Brindisi; Patras&#45;Venice is duopoly.</description>

<description>This research develops an engineering approach that brings meaning to the context of Maritime Transportation System of Systems &#40;MTSoS&#41; and increases understanding of how to govern it more effectively. We suppose that&#58; System of Systems &#40;SoS&#41; can be identified by its distinguishing characteristics; Maritime Transportation Systems &#40;MTS&#41; can be considered as a SoS in which constituencies seek their own goals; and its integrated objective is to transfer goods safely and efficiently. Based on these premises, we present our management framework. The proposed framework enables us to engineer and manage MTS more effectively from a System of Systems Engineering &#40;SoSE&#41; perspective.</description>
