  • Knowledge Acquisition and Innovation: Potentials for Upgrading by Small Furniture Firms in Indonesia
by Marina Van Geenhuizen, Nurul Indarti
Abstract: In the furniture industry of Indonesia, particularly its small firm segment, innovation is sorely needed to respond to an increased global competition but also to a growing depletion of the forests. In general, small manufacturers in textiles, leather products, furniture etc. in developing economies are captured in dependency relationships with local buyers and in a situation of poor access to new knowledge, preventing the upgrading of business practices. There is however a lack of systematic insight into how pervasive this situation is. This paper takes the small firm segment in the furniture cluster of Jepara (Java) as an example and pictures - using systematic fieldwork - a dominant knowledge acquisition through learning-by-doing and local buyers, and a concomitant low level of innovativeness. The need for upgrading to global standards cannot yet be satisfied by most firms, but the presence of some firms that are successful in this respect indicates a perspective for improvement.
