The study analyses the question: How are the level of parental education and the family circumstances of students related to the acceptance of modern, innovative and motivating pedagogical/educational tools? Do traditional frontal teaching methods for passive learning or modern and innovative teaching methods that encourage active learning to motivate students? Results show that the degree to which students' motivation is enhanced is influenced by school and family circumstances. Moreover, disadvantaged students are primarily motivated to learn through the use of new, student-centred pedagogical tools, which increase motivation through providing an experience of group work, shared thinking and debate, problem understanding, and co-creation. The research utilised a case study on San Diego, which is one of the top three life sciences ecosystems in the world. Unlike previous studies, this research is an analysis of the ecosystem's evolution in each life-cycle phase - birth, expansion, leadership and self-renewal - and the key innovation policy measures related to these phases. The findings indicate that traditional policy measures must be reconsidered in the era of business ecosystems. Journal: Int. Virtual classrooms and e-learning are therefore being introduced not only at open universities offering distance learning, but also at other traditional universities where face-to-face learning prevails. In this paper, we describe a small-scale experimental e-learning activity concerning the integration of open-source web-conferencing tools into a teaching scenario at a traditional university, aiming to guide future improvements of our current e-learning infrastructure. While the experiment answers positively the question of very affordable technical solutions and reports about positive students' perceptions, it also reveals the need for teachers to be provided with specific knowledge about e-learning pedagogy in order to cope with new challenges, such as achieving student-centred teaching also in learning scenarios, including distance e-learning. The contribution of this research is an empirical analysis and a case study, which uncovers the attributes and weaknesses of TE labour market and their divergence and failure, supported by the analysis of master students' survey. Students lack opportunities to gain new knowledge and opportunities for personal and professional development when they finally enter the labour market. Entry into the labour market is particularly difficult for female TE graduates and graduates with social sciences, business and law degree. This research contributes to greater integration and to the achievement of strategic objectives of both TE and employment policies. Thus, it can help define the appropriate TE policies, objectives and particularly measures and mechanisms, which could encourage TE institutions management to decrease graduate unemployment and contribute to greater TE success. We realise and stress that policymakers need to do more to synchronise TE and employment policies to stifle the employability of graduates. Journal: Int. Within this highly competitive environment, service innovation is dramatically gaining more attention since innovativeness can create a long-term sustainable growth for organisations. The purpose of this study is to identify the influence of gamification on the level of customer involvement in the new service development (NSD) process. A quasi-experimental design was used where treatment and control groups participated in pre-test/post-test activities under gamified and none gamified environments. To analyse the results, structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the proposed theoretical framework. This study provides a first step towards further investigations of the role of gamification as moderator variable strengthening the relationship between customer engagement and new service development process involvement. Implications for theory and practice are discussed, and directions for future research provided. Journal: Int. It also presents an innovative attempt to explore the relationship between the reflections of students and their performance in the subject. The feedbacks from students were collected and analysed using text-mining techniques, and a machine-learning algorithm was used to identify the association between the reflective feedback text and the corresponding final grades of the students. The supervised machine-learning algorithm produces an inferred function from the training data so as to make predictions about the output values of the testing data. The results prove that reflective journals can be a valuable means of assessing student learning in a blended learning environment, and also offers a good reference for educators to have a better understanding regarding the performance of students. In the current study, we ought to examine the effect of this strategy in the Arab community in Israel, and its consequences on reading comprehension of Arabic language. In order to examine this issue, a quasi-experimental method through practical application of educational units constructed in accordance with the strategic elements of RT was conducted. Sixty-one students from secondary public schools participated in this study. The participants served as two groups: experimental group and a control group. The results showed that there is a significant difference in the levels of metacognitive reading comprehension (self-monitoring, planning of task parameters, and assessment of strategy) between the two groups. The reciprocal teaching strategy had a clear impact on the students' skills and improved their level of comprehension of the texts. Further, the study confirmed that metacognitive reading comprehension dimensions depend upon the extent of students' exposure to strategies and skills that give them the ability to interact with texts. Recommendations for the implementation of RT to benefit students are suggested, especially in the context of Arab population. Journal: Int. Surviving and achieving some performance has become the main concern of managers. The literature points to innovation as a driver capable of generating competitive advantage for companies. However, understanding how companies perceive contingencies and manage to anticipate in order to overcome obstacles has become the main concern of this work. To answer this question, a research was undertaken in companies located in one of the poorest regions of Brazil. The data collected were treated by means of factorial analysis. The obtained results show that the changes caused in the external environment are perceived through the company's network contacts. With the support of top management, employees develop innovative situations capable of generating the competitive advantage necessary for strategic success. Journal: Int. Three commonly used vocabulary learning tasks: reading comprehension, sentence writing, and cloze-exercise were combined with two types of annotations: pictorial annotations and textual annotations in four tasks. Tasks 1 and 3 were provided with pictorial annotation, while tasks 2 and 4 were textual annotations. 130 college students were recruited and allocated randomly to the four tasks groups to test their learning effectiveness respectively. The results demonstrated that cloze-exercises with textual glosses were as effective as reading comprehension with pictorial glosses, and cloze-exercises with pictorial glosses were as effective as sentence-writing with textual glosses, which is in accord with the checklist of technique feature analysis and confirms the effectiveness of pictorial annotations to word learning. This two-stage study examines in flipped learning context, how students perceived learning guided by the 5E design model (engagement-exploration-explanation-elaboration-evaluation), and how different technologies impacted the learning experience. We first reported a multiple-case study on how students felt about the 5E model-based flipped learning, facilitated by mobile instant messaging (MIM) tools. We then conducted a comparative study to investigate how students felt about using either MIM or a threaded asynchronous forum for discussion. The results suggested that 92% of participants found flipped learning more engaging and 81% reported that flipped learning gave them more time to discuss or solve problems. Most students welcomed using MIM for flipped learning, but online forum was still preferred for academic discussions. Possible reasons and suggestions for future research are discussed. Journal: Int. As such, they expect their university learning experience to emulate their everyday online experiences. Until recently, however, traditional university teaching has tended to focus on 'knowledge transfer'. In order to reengage with students, many universities are providing online tools and courses. But, not all topics are suitable for online learning. Some topics still require hands-on experience - especially where the outcome is targeted to the manufacturing industry. The 3D printer is a teaching tool that benefits from both hands-on and online support. Moreover, it can be used to help reengage students disaffected by traditional teaching methods and as a tool for transitioning to more online teaching methods. This paper outlines how the 3D printer is being used in university classrooms to supplement online teaching which is career focussed. Journal: Int. They must be very competent in all the fundamental nursing skills including reporting vital signs of a patient, techniques for different kinds of injection methods and simple wound dressing. They should be familiar with a hospital ward environment. This paper introduces the use of immersive reality including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) for nurse training. With these new technologies, nursing students can practise their nursing skills by visualising a clinical environment at anytime and anywhere. It also provides a platform for the clinical simulations of a number of scenarios where students have to carry out routine tasks and practices. For learning the fundamental nursing skills, students can practise the special skills over the 3D models in an immersive way. Our application can reduce inexperienced nursing students' anxiety and make them more familiar with the ward environment and the fundamental nursing skill, which can then minimise medical error in their real practicum. Typical fieldwork procedures comprise three steps: pre-learning, on-site fieldwork, and post-learning. This study aims to support mainly pre- and post-learning steps. Four fieldwork experiences were targeted in which the students recorded 360-degree videos, reflected on their experience, and presented their experiences to non-participating students by showing their 360-degree videos on a virtual reality headset. By observing these actions, the authors were able to determine some of the effects of using 360-degree videos as a learning aid, including helping students detect what they missed while on site, maintaining students' excitement and motivation after returning, and promoting pre-learning for younger students. Further practical efforts are needed to confirm such effects and pursue appropriate use of 360-degree video for fieldwork. Journal: Int. Therefore, there are efforts to prolong an active life of older people, and ICT, both devices and services may assist them in this process. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of the internet among older people in the Czech Republic with respect to their age and gender. The key methods exploited in this study include a questionnaire survey. The results indicate that the age is a decisive factor in the use of the internet by seniors. However, the gender seems not to belong to important factors. Generally, older people mostly use the internet for socialising (communication, sharing images), gaining information and exploiting e-services (banking, shopping). The results also suggest that they should be trained in the use of the internet and considering the collected information. Journal: Int. With both conceptualisations, information literacy research has primarily emphasised formal learning environments. This literature review relies upon socio-cultural theory to expand understanding of K-12 students' information literacy within the under-represented perspective of informal learning environments, such as homes, public properties, and online spaces. Guided by the research questions, the inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified to select the related literatures for review. The literature review shows that K-12 students engage in a range of digital meaning-making practices in informal learning environments. It is recommended that the evaluation standards and approaches for students' information literacy should be changed, and a collaborative relationship should be established among schools, families, and the communities for promoting information literacy. However, the issue of assessment literacy deficiency and insecurity about effective assessment implementation among pre-service and in-service teachers has been documented, which inevitably weakens the effectiveness of using assessment to improve learning. In this study, a deep learning approach with a core component of peer assessment of peer assessment plan was implemented to enhance the assessment literacy of a group of pre-service teachers. The design was informed by the taxonomy of learning in the cognitive domain and affective domain. Results show that they were able to prepare peer assessment plans in good quality. After conducting the activity of peer assessment on peer assessment plan, they demonstrated a deep level of attitude change and explicitly expressed their willingness to implement peer assessment in their future teaching. The deep learning approach to a great extent enhanced teachers' assessment literacy. Journal: Int. This paper presented how instructional videos can be produced with limited budget by leveraging the manpower of student helpers, and how a familiar face in the videos affects the learning outcomes. An instructor appearing on a video was known to affect learning effectiveness, yet similar effect by face familiarity remains open. We produced two sets of videos to teach business etiquette to undergraduates (n = 47), with casts familiar and unfamiliar to students, respectively, and assigned two groups of students to view each of them. Both groups learnt equally well, but familiar faces significantly reduced learning effectiveness for students who worked full-time before; otherwise, face familiarity has no impact on learning outcomes. Theoretical explanation is provided. We hope these results are useful to education practitioners in using instructional videos. Journal: Int. The present study was conducted among 1,000 students from universities in Hong Kong and 552 students from Poland. Four behavioural variables (entrepreneurial intention, attitude toward entrepreneurship, efficacy) were measured. First, attitudes, innovativeness and self-efficacy affect entrepreneurial intention. Second, significant differences between student groups from different cultural backgrounds are found. Thirdly, engineering and science students from Hong Kong manifest stronger entrepreneurial intentions than those from business courses whereas opposite results were obtained concerning Polish students. Fourthly, students from business courses exhibit slightly stronger entrepreneurial intentions than those from engineering and science. Our study shows clearly that the difference between the two countries entrepreneurial intention is not merely affected by cultural background, but also by discipline. Journal: Int. However, studies on the link between innovativeness and business performance of firms have not been studied much in Vietnam. Therefore, the research aims to identify and assess the impact of innovativeness on four perspectives in balanced scorecard including customers, finance, internal processes, employee learning and growth. Results from 144 responses out of 670 surveys on Japanese firms investing in Vietnam showed that innovativeness has a significant impact on business performance in both financial and non-financial aspects. Additionally, improving non-financial performance also has a positive impact on financial performance in firms. This conjointly implies that in the context of the increasingly spirited market as it is today to survive and develop in the long run, firms need to specialise in improving innovativeness to extend business performance efficiency. It was found that there were high needs for the development of trainer competencies in terms of knowledge, skills and attributes because the trainer competency levels were just average. To improve the DSD trainer competencies, a new competency model for DSD trainers was designed and evaluated using a task-oriented approach. The resulting trainer competency model contained seven main units of competency including investigation and diagnosis of problems and needs, training course design, training procedure design, training techniques, training measurement and evaluation, career expertise and productivity improvement. Moreover, the specific competencies for training in workplaces were found to include diagnosis of problems and brainstorm/seminar techniques in workplaces. The model evaluation results indicated that the model was effective for the improvement of DSD trainers' skills in five industrial workplaces and could be applicable to other kinds of industrial workplaces. This research was about making sense out of the body of knowledge underlying social business concepts and perspectives, stemming from the social entrepreneurship literature, and building on the so-called business model ontology that underlies the widely used business model canvas. The developed constructs were built in the scope of a design science approach to research, supported by an assessment process that involved several steps comprising the interaction with well-known academicians and practitioners in the area of social business, culminating with a case-study for final validation and assessment. Interviews with the experts from the field helped in the iterative development process of the ontology and its assessment, further supported by informed arguments and a continuous review of the literature. It provides interfaces from multiple data sources to support data and information integrity between various information systems. This study was aimed to: 1) designed an interoperable component to integrate several sub-systems into a centralised data centre; 2) developed a prototype based on the design to be used within an existing data centre system. Both purposes were done to support data integration as required by implementing ETL process, crypto-post, and REST service. This work has provided the solution of data integration model between information systems running on HTTP protocol. The integration model used both synchronous and asynchronous schemes. The methodology that was used in this research was research and development with agile SCRUM framework. The SCRUM framework was used to manage all processes of the development workflow before the production release. The result of the SCRUM framework implementation was burn down process chart and the retrospective logs. It shown the effectiveness of teamwork during the development and the release phases. There were three stages of testing that had been conducted consisted of white box and black box testing, followed by the performance verification. Journal: Int. It allows users to create and participate to several communities through different functionalities such as communication, collaboration, sharing, updating and interaction. The use of social media in learning field has been increased. Therefore, most educational institutions nowadays are using these technologies to enhance users' engagement. We propose in this paper an informal learning environment called SM-ILE (a trace-based framework for social media as an informal learning environment). This model aims at detecting intrusion learners to improve their learning by recommending to them good collaborators and relevant resources. Moreover, we analyse and qualitatively compare social media and informal learning related works. The proposed algorithm was applied to an informal social environment (http://sncl.ga). An experiment was conducted in a group of students in an Algerian university. The obtained results from this experiment were good and very efficient. Journal: Int. On the other hand, entrepreneurial orientation has been repeatedly proven to positively impact firm performance both at the organisational level, but also at the level of enterprise clusters. This means that within high-entrepreneurial orientation firm clusters, both the overall cluster and the firms' individual performances are positively affected (Yao et al., 2009). However, existing literature provides little guidance on how HRM practices could help firms improve their performance through fostering entrepreneurial orientation. This paper aims to shed more light on how human resource management could become a major driver of firm performance while leveraging on learning to translate individual and collective abilities into value adding entrepreneurial actions. For this purpose, this paper follows a systematic literature review as a recognised evidence-based tool for theory building (Tranfield et al., 2003). The objective is to develop an integrative theoretical framework that explains how HRM practices provide firms with superior performance, using entrepreneurial orientation as an intermediate construct. As a result, they have difficulties in linking their understanding of these concepts to real-world experience. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of using a short video clip production made by students themselves in explaining economic concepts. The respondents in this study consisted of 96 first semester undergraduate students (over September 2018 to January 2019) who took introductory economic courses at the Faculty of Business and Management at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Kota Samarahan, Sarawak. Our results exhibit positive responses on both the level of satisfaction and perceived learning performance by students with the overall mean scores of 3.79. From these results, we offer several recommendations on using digital learning in the academic curriculum. Journal: Int. However, this tool is not sufficiently effective to foster student attempts to form a consensus. Moreover, referential information is needed as evidence during group discussions. To address these problems, we propose a new approach to comparing and merging mind maps produced individually by students in a group. The proposed system integrates linked open data (LOD) standard web technologies to facilitate consensus-building processes. It also employs the resource description framework (RDF) to uniformly represent mind maps, which enables computability and sharing of mind maps. A prototype is developed and evaluated in a group of 24 students. The results show that the proposed system outperforms the traditional method significantly, as it improves students' performance in discovering new knowledge, creativity, group collaboration, and consensus reaching. Owing to the fact that both lexical chunks and translation seem to positively influence EFL learners' emotions by putting them at ease in dealing with psychological challenges, it may be wise to explore the prominence of contrastive lexical competence (CLC) in relation to WTC and EI among EFL learners. This study investigated the presence of possible relationships among CLC, WTC, and EI. In order to achieve the objectives of the study, 90 upper intermediate IELTS students (18 to 45 years old) were selected from two English institutions (Ariana and Amene) in Ahvaz and Khorramshahr respectively on the basis of their QPT scores. Regarding the purpose of this study, statistical Pearson correlation coefficient (<i>r</i>), multiple regression, and partial correlations were applied. The data analysis of the results revealed significant relationships among the three variables. It was also found that EFL learners' CLC scores are more accurately predicted by their EI scores than their WTC scores. The findings of this study may be quite telling to language learners and teachers in that they may better appreciate the crucial role of CLC in their educational practices. Journal: Int.
